Why surf in Vietnam? Watch this video!



What is surfing?

Surfing is the art of riding ocean waves on surfboard. It is an ancient sport that is said to have originated from the kings and queens of Polynesia tribes of the Pacific Ocean dating back at least 500 years in the Polynesian cultures. They developed the sport and carried it wherever they went introducing it to missionaries and European explorers.
 
Contemporary surfboards are still made from polyurethane and fibreglass. However, they are shorter (1.8–2 m long), narrower (43–48 cm), thinner (5 cm), and very light (2.3–2.7 kg). Carefully shaped rails (edges of the board), noses, and tails, together with three fins, allow riders to move their craft freely around the wave and have transformed surfing into a gymnastic dance.
 
Surfing is much harder than it looks from the beach. However, any person who has average athletic ability (of any size) can master surfing with the right instruction, patience and passion. It is great fun, and good exercise. 
 
Surfing is a common aquatic sport that is getting more and more popular around the world. Surfers appear wherever waves break, from Norway to the Antarctic, from the Mediterranean Sea to Lake Michigan. Mui Ne is also a new and fascinating venue for surfing in Vietnam
 

Who is able to Surf?

Surfing is for all walks of life, from small children to the more elderly from any culture. Vietnam with its over 3000kms of coastline has many locations for surfing from beginners to more advanced surfers. Surfing is a sport that allows you to really get in touch with nature, just you, your board and the waves. The feeling you get when ride a wave fills your body with adrenaline and will have you smiling ear to ear.
 
 Surfing is also a relatively cheap sport compared other sports. With a used surfboard costing as little as USD 100 if you lucky and new boards staring around USD 500. Once you have a board all you need to do is get to the beach. So why not surfing for Vietnamese it is a great fun and exercise for the whole family to enjoy.


Surfing for children

Surfing is without doubt suitable for children, surfing lessons are always supervised with experienced instructors. Parents should be careful when children play by themselves though. When people play by themselves they must have a reasonable level of swimming ability and understand the conditions and hazards of the ocean.

1.  Relaxation
Surfing can offer a lot of fun to participants. It can also help you feel flying over breaking waves and overcome the power of nature. It makes a new way to get insight into the beauty of seascape.  Not only is a great feeling to ride a wave. The peace that a surfer feels as he is waiting for a wave is a form, a mediation some feel. Just the sound of the ocean, the wind and the birds. No traffic of motorbikes or cars, just you and the waves.
2.  Improved balance
One of the best exercise benefits associated with surfing is the improvement that it creates in your balance. In order to stay on the surfboard, you must have a strong ability to maintain your balance. This skill protects yourself from falls and injures in day to day life.
3.  Increased strength
You don’t have to be strong to surf,  you really just need a good technique and basic level of strength. This comes mostly from paddling your surfboard out into the ocean, and results in the in toned muscle and added strength in your arms, shoulders and chest. Toned muscle is important for a number of reasons. It increases your ability to do your activities of daily living.
4.  Increased flexibility
If you have a low degree of flexibility, and reach for something on a high counter, chances are that you will pull a muscle in your back. In contrast, if you have more flexibility, you will be able to reach that top shelf with ease. Like with any sport being flexible is important, surfing for sure will flexibility to daily routine.
5.  Improved cardiovascular fitness
One of the most important benefits associated with surfing is the improvement in your cardiovascular system. Your cardiovascular system is composed of your heart, as well as the veins and arteries that work to bring blood to and from the heart. Strengthening your cardiovascular system can help improve shortness of breath, fatigue and even prevent heart attacks.

Requirements to learn surfing

·     Age: 7 years or older
·     Clothing suitable for swimming (we can supply lycra long sleeve t-shirts)
·     Health: good
·     The ability to swim 200m
·     Communication: Vietnamese, English, Spanish, Portuguese & Russian

 

Q & A

1.    How old do you have to be to learn to surf?
Children over 7 years old. Children under this age may be included in the classes if conditions allow or they have adequate skills. Towards the end of the lesson the younger ones can usually join in the fun at no cost. Our priority is on safety but we like to include all members of the family where possible.
For the more mature students, lesson plans can be adapted to suit fitness level and age. 
2.    How far do we go out into the surf?
We usually operate in waist height water where people can stand on the sandbank easily catching white-water waves. As skills develop where appropriate, students will be taken into deeper water.
3.    Can the whole family do a surf lesson?
We specialise in family groups.
4.    Is surfing dangerous?
Our main focus (apart from having too much fun) is on safety and as part lessons you will learn safety skills that will last a lifetime.
5.    What about sharks?
Statistically you are in far more danger driving to the beach than you ever will be surfing. Less than a handful of people die from shark attacks worldwide every year and this is mostly in the US and South Africa. In fact 90 people die each year from an allergic reaction to peanuts worldwide!
6.    What is the maximum number of people in a group?
If you book ahead we can cater for up to 16 students at a time and can organise multiple sessions for larger groups. 

1.      Where to surf in Mui Ne,/Vietnam?

Location

Mui Ne is located 200 km to the north of Ho Chi Minh City and is the perfect venue for surfing with it’s white sand beaches with no rocks or corals, combined with it’s exposure to the ocean swells of the East Sea. The ideal time for surfing is October to May with ocean swells pushing from down from the north of Taiwan and the Philippines created from the northeast monsoons. As the capital of Vietnam’s high quality beach resorts, providing world-class accommodation and meals, Mui Ne makes the ideal place for your first surfing experience.

Climate

Mui Ne offers the best condition in all of Vietnam for wind and water sports and has an average of 227 days per year of wind over 12 knots. There are 2 seasons a year, dry season & rainy season. Dry season lasts from October to early May which is the best surfing season with wind up 12 knots.
