PERU TRIP:
BACKGROUND
In the summer of 2009, the Kite-n-Surf team took off for some R&R in Peru.
Of course, in our case rest and recuperation involves heading for one of the world's
top wave-kiting and surfing spots - the classic busman's holiday!
Our main destination was Lobitos, a one-dog desolate town a few hours from the Equador
border. There is nothing to commend Lobitos to the average tourist, but for
one reason it stands out - beautiful peeling barrels, half a kilometer long and
up to 3 meters high, with a daily cross-offshore wind almost guaranteed between
April and December. Here we stayed for a couple of months, living pretty rough
and surfing and kiting every day in some of the best conditions you can find on
this planet.
Lobitos is an old oil town, developed by British Petroleum when they were pumping
oil out of this region. The town once boasted two casinos, but the army cleared
out the British after the military coup in 1968, and the town was looted for everything
of any value, even the roofs on the old wooden buildings here. It now looks
like a set from a Sergeo Leone film, complete with starving dogs and dodgy local
characters. However, there is a underground surfing and kitesurfing community living
there too, and loving the amazing kitesurfing and surfing conditions.
